30 Tile Kiln Hill

30 Tile Kiln Hill is a locally listed building occupying a prominent location within the Blean Conservation Area. The original house appears on the earliest 1872 ordnance survey map with a single storey annexe added to the rear of the house in the 1990s. A mature garden extends to the east of the house, which opens to views of the surrounding open countryside and ancient woodland beyond.

Our client has strong, lifelong family connections to the local area and wished to extend and move into the annexe to allow their adult children to live next door in the main house.

The proposed extension creates the necessary living space by subtly raising the roof of the existing annexe to form an additional floor. Whilst changes to the roofline have been minimised, due to the sensitivity of the site, this modest increase in height has been exploited to completely reconfigure the internal layout. The new mezzanine floor is pulled back internally to create a surprisingly generous double height open plan living and kitchen space. Enlarged openings have been formed in the garden façade which, combined with a new dormer window, strengthen connections to the garden and celebrate long views of the countryside beyond.

To maintain the character of the original house, the external materials of the street facing facades are restricted to the existing Tyrolean render and roof tiles. Addressing the garden, the extension is expressed as a distinct contemporary roof volume with the use of charred timber cladding above a masonry base referencing the traditional architecture of the surrounding Tile Kiln Hill area.

We are absolutely delighted with the work carried out by Barreto-Smith Architects.  They helped us realise our dream of modernising and upgrading the annexe attached to our home.  From start to finish Chris and Rosanna were professional,  approachable and highly organised.   Their structured approach meant we always knew exactly what stage we were at and what was coming next,  which gave us complete confidence throughout the process.  The end result exceeded our expectations and we couldn't recommend them highly enough.
